Increasing social media engagement, why and how?

If you read our previous article, you’ll know why social media is important for any business, irrespective of the company size or product/service. The question that now arises is, how do you use these platforms to your full advantage to increase engagement and attract more customers?

Ever hear social media influencers and marketers throw around the word social media engagement? What is it? And why exactly, is it so important?

As Stacey Mclachlan describes it, “Social media engagement is the measurement of comments, likes, and shares. Of course, you want to rack up your followers, but ultimately, the greatest measure of social media success is an engaged audience, not just a big one.”

At Merali Digital, we believe it is all about quality over quantity.

Think of it like having loads of people come over to your place, but you have zero interaction with all who’ve made an effort to knock on your door. Daunting, isn’t it? For both parties, I might add.  This is the same with social media. Interacting and engaging with your followers is crucial for your business as it allows you to build a valuable relationship and helps you better understand your target audience. This not only increases the longevity and loyalty of the client but will also increase sales in the long run.

The main question now is, how do you do it?

It is important that you first analyse your engagement, this means that you would need to identify your current followers, how many shares and comments you get on an average for each post.

We advise, keeping a record of this and see what posts get more engagement as oppose to which don’t. Using the information you’ve now assimilated you will be able to collect clues on what is working for you and use them to your advantage to create posts that would attract valuable customers to your brand.

Selecting what strategy best suits you would be the next step to increase your social media engagement.

At Merali Digital, we don’t believe in the 'one-size-fits-all' approach as we understand each business has different goals and audiences to target.

A couple of quick tips would be:

Listen to what your followers want and create valuable content so that they keep coming back for more.  This may sound obvious, but it is important that you are posting content that keeps your audience engaged and would be helpful for them too. You could do this by asking your followers questions, for example, if you are a bag company, posting tips on how to look after your bag, or advise on how to match their clothes with your bag and you could incorporate the marketing aspect by advertising your bag. Of course, this varies from business to business, however being able to find the content that is best suited to you and your customers would allow you to gain engagement and garner more sales.

You would need to create a plan with the information you’ve collected from analysing your posts.

Identify your TA and what sort of approach you would be going for, it could be educating your customers about your product, or using memes as a fun way to advertise your service.

Having conversations with your followers would help increase engagement, for example responding to your followers DMs or messages under your posts. This would allow your followers to know that there is somebody behind the scenes, increase customer satisfaction and it can also help with building your brand image too.
